Year 10 Manipulating Algebra

Learning Objective

WALT translate between words and symbols and understand algebraic expressions

By the end of the lesson
ALL of us will be able to understand algebraic expressions
MOST of us will be able to substitute a positive number into an algebraic expression
SOME of us will be able to substitute a negative number into an algebraic expression

Investing:
  • This is useful because...

Preparing:

Explain the difference between an expression (2x + 3) and an equation (2x + 3 = 12)

(Using mini whiteboards)

Ask pupils to think and write down any number. Ask them to then apply the following rules to the number. (1) Add 5 (2) multiply the result by 2 (3) subtract 4 from that result (4) divide the answer by 2 (5) subtract the original answer

Ask everyone to share their results. (Everyone should get 3)
Why?
How does that work?
Some discussion should follow....
We now need to know how to write epressions given words
If 2 less than 6 is 6 - 2. How do we write 2 less than n?

Discovering:
  • Can you figure it out yourself from these examples?

  • Try to predict the next one aloud or on a mini-whiteboard.
  • Investigate...

Discussing:

  • What would this one be? Tell your learning partner. Convince them you're right.
  • Explain how you know.
  • How would you explain this to someone who was new to it?
  • Two of the cards have words missing can you write down what they would be
After 10 minutes randomly ask for the answer to the two missing cards.

Explaining:

Practicing:

Sharing:

Assessing:

At the end of the lesson pupils fill in this exit pass to check their understanding of the lesson
(Many thanks to Miss Moores for the excellent template she shared with the department)

Developing:

  • Next we could learn...
  • This leads to...
  • Now try...
